Report Scope and Method
This weekly update tracks what it actually costs to move value on-chain across five rails - Bitcoin, Ethereum mainnet, Layer 2, Solana and TRON - and, where relevant, the cost of moving USDT specifically.
Two changes this week. First, prices are read from market data rather than carried estimates: BTC ~$81,500, ETH ~$2,485, TRX ~$0.3263 as of September 3-4. Second, I separate the native cost from the dollar cost, because a fee quoted only in dollars hides whether the fee itself moved or the token did.
1. The Big Picture: The Cost Floor Is Stable, The Baseline Moved
Every rail's native cost was stable this week. What changed is the conversion. With TRX at $0.3263 rather than the $0.16 used in August estimates, the same 1.37 TRX of rented TRON energy now reads as roughly $0.45 instead of the previously quoted $0.20-0.24. Anyone budgeting TRON transfer costs in dollars needs to re-run that arithmetic.

2. TRON: The USDT Cost Leader
TRON remains the cheapest way to move USDT at scale, and this week its USDT float lead over Ethereum widened to a record of roughly $18B ($91.8B against Ethereum's $73.7B). The cost advantage is now three to five times Ethereum mainnet for an equivalent ERC-20 transfer, and several hundred times cheaper than burning TRX outright.

The spread between the cheapest and most expensive method on the same chain is about 4.7x. That is larger than the spread between most chains, which is why method choice matters more than chain choice for anyone moving USDT on TRON regularly.
3. The Energy Market Inside TRON
TRON's own Q2 disclosure provides the clearest read on the energy market: the TRX burn ratio fell 5%, which the network attributed directly to users choosing to stake TRX for energy rather than burn it. That is a structural shift in how the network's resources are paid for.

One practical warning: a first USDT transfer to an address that has never held USDT consumes roughly 131,000 energy - double the normal amount - because the network must create the token account. Budget about $0.89 rented or ~$4.28 burned for those.
4. Ethereum and L2s: Premium Rail vs Mass Rail
Ethereum's two-tier structure is now unambiguous: about 400,000 daily active wallets on mainnet against more than 3.2 million daily active users across L2s. Gas held at 8-15 gwei this week, so a plain ETH transfer cost $0.42-0.80 while a USDT or USDC transfer cost roughly $1.30-2.40.

The headline "Ethereum is cheap now" is only true for one of those three rows. For stablecoin transfers specifically, mainnet remains 65-240x more expensive than an L2.
5. Cross-Chain Costs: The Hidden Layer
Cross-chain movement is where cost stops being a fee and becomes a risk premium. Bridging typically costs $0.50-2.00 and takes 5-20 minutes, but this week showed what the tail looks like.

6. Volume-Weighted Cost Trends
Volume matters more than headline fees. TRON's Q2 settlement of $2.08T implies roughly $22.9B of daily stablecoin settlement on a rail that costs about $0.45 per transfer. On that basis, TRON settles more daily stablecoin value than any other rail I track, at a cost per transfer that is a fraction of mainnet's.

I expect native costs to stay flat. The two variables that could move them are TRX price - every 10% move in TRX shifts the dollar cost of a rented TRON energy transfer by the same 10% - and Ethereum gas, which has been stable in the 8-15 gwei band for weeks. Watch whether the Liquid incident pushes users toward chains with clearer finality, and whether MAS consultation P015-2026 changes where regulated issuers hold reserves.

For a business moving $100,000 of USDT per month in 200 transfers, the arithmetic is simple and the method choice dominates.

TRON transfers are free.
