This is the weekly cost report. It prices the same transfer on every rail a business realistically uses - a native transfer, an ERC-20 or TRC-20 stablecoin transfer, and a Layer-2 transfer - and converts everything to dollars at the week's closing prices so the rails can be compared directly.

1. The Big Picture: The Ranking Inverted

For two years the ordering of this report looked fixed: Solana cheapest, L2s next, TRON close behind, then a wide gap to Ethereum mainnet and Bitcoin. The honest version of this week's table is that the gap was never where our earlier editions put it. Ethereum mainnet gas traded in a 0.19-0.5 gwei band - the low end of an August range Etherscan's daily averages already put at roughly 0.3-2 gwei, which puts an ERC-20 transfer near $0.03-0.09 now and near $0.05-0.15 then, not the $1.20-1.80 our August editions printed from an overstated gas band. TRON's rented-energy route is unchanged at 1.37 TRX - about $0.45-0.47 at the TRX prices of recent weeks, not the $0.20-0.25 those same editions carried. And Bitcoin's median has sat at the 1 sat/vB floor since June 9, about $0.10-0.12 all along. The ranking did not flip this week; the record caught up with it. On the corrected numbers TRON is the most expensive of the three major rails, and has been for weeks.

Two caveats before anyone rewrites a treasury policy on this table. First, these are chain-leg costs: on rails that already charge cents, chasing an even cheaper rail saves under a few cents per transfer - real, but dwarfed by the $1-5 exchange withdrawal fee charged on the same transfer. Second, a rail swap is not free - moving an existing USDT balance from TRON to Ethereum mainnet costs $2-8 in bridging and slippage, which at current fee levels is roughly five to twenty transfers' worth of savings.

2. TRON: Cheapest in TRX, No Longer Cheapest in Dollars

3. The Energy Market Inside TRON

The tron energy rental market is what holds TRON's cost steady in TRX terms. More than 60% of supply is staked for energy and bandwidth, JustLend's SBM market stood at $3.38B of TVL on September 1, and its sTRX liquid-staking product holds more than 9.73 billion TRX across 17,000-plus addresses. That depth is why the rental rate clears in a narrow band rather than spiking when volume rises - $166B of stablecoin value moved across the chain in the week ending September 3 without moving the price.

Fee abstraction deserves to be treated as a cost feature rather than a convenience feature. If a user never has to buy TRX, the network's dollar cost stops being their problem: it is the energy provider's, and the provider's exposure is TRX-denominated and hedgeable in a way a retail user's is not.

4. Ethereum and L2s: Mainnet Joins the Cheap Tier

The most consequential change this week is a correction to this report's own history. Mainnet gas traded in a 0.19-0.5 gwei band - the low end of an August range Etherscan's daily averages put at roughly 0.3-2 gwei, and down about half from the 1.65 gwei average of a year ago. At 0.5 gwei, a native transfer costs about two and a half cents and a 180,000-gas swap about 21 cents. An ERC-20 stablecoin transfer lands between roughly three and nine cents depending on which end of the band you price it at. Mainnet has been a cheap rail for months; the dollar figures our August editions printed for it were a baseline error, now corrected.

First, the saving from switching rails is real but small in absolute terms - about $2,050 a month at the $500,000 volume level, or roughly 40 cents per transfer - and that per-transfer saving is smaller than a single $1-5 exchange withdrawal fee. Second, moving the balance to capture it costs $2-8 per bridge, which pays back only after dozens of transfers. Third, the comparison assumes the same transfer count on each rail; consolidating transfers cuts cost on any chain faster than switching chains does.
