Weekly On-Chain Transaction Data Report - August 17-23, 2026
Overview: Steady Growth, Stable Costs
This week's data tells a familiar story at a higher level: stablecoin supply grew again, fees stayed low, and the L2 cost compression story continued. There were no anomalies; the four-week trends are intact.
I cover the same six datasets as last week - network activity, stablecoin settlement, USDT on TRON, fees and gas, large transfers, and exchange flows - each compared week-over-week and against the trailing four-week average.
1. Network Activity
Daily active addresses and transaction counts were flat to slightly up across the major chains. TRON processed the most application traffic, Solana the most raw throughput.
| Chain | Daily active addresses (7d avg) | w/w change | vs 4w avg |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRON | ~2.45M | +0.4% | +2.1% |
| Ethereum | ~415K | +1.2% | +1.5% |
| Solana | ~1.12M | +1.8% | +4.1% |
| Bitcoin | ~755K | -0.7% | -0.9% |
2. Stablecoin Settlement
Stablecoin supply crossed $300B. USDC grew faster in percentage terms, helped by L2 liquidity. The dominant trends are unchanged from prior weeks.
| Metric | This week | w/w change | vs 4w avg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total stablecoin supply | ~$300B | +0.7% | +4.0% |
| USDT supply | ~$189B | +0.5% | +3.6% |
| USDC supply | ~$73.5B | +1.5% | +6.2% |
| Daily stablecoin transfer value | ~$22.8B | +1.3% | +3.5% |
| Daily stablecoin transfer count | ~7.2M | +1.4% | +3.7% |
3. USDT on TRON
TRON's role as the default USDT rail held steady at ~54% of USDT transfer counts. The all-in cost of a transfer held at $0.20-0.24.
| Metric | This week | w/w change | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share of USDT transfers on TRON | ~54% | Flat | Count basis |
| Daily USDT transfer count (TRON) | ~6.2M | Flat | Above 4w avg |
| Avg USDT transfer size (TRON) | ~$1,380 | -1.4% | More, smaller transfers |
| TRON USDT transfer cost | $0.20-0.24 | Flat | Energy market calm |
4. Fees and Gas
Fees were stable. Ethereum gas held in the 8-12 gwei band, Bitcoin fees ticked up modestly after a quiet prior week, and a third L2 fee cut in three weeks pushed USDC lower on Base and Arbitrum.
| Rail | Typical transfer cost | w/w change | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (avg) | ~$2.50-3.30 | +3% | Mempool ticked up |
| Ethereum ERC-20 | ~$1.20-1.80 | Flat | Gas 8-12 gwei |
| TRON USDT | ~$0.20-0.24 | Flat | Energy rental stable |
| Arbitrum / Base USDC | < $0.008 | -12% | Third L2 cut in three weeks |
| Solana | ~$0.0002 | Flat | Structurally cheap |
5. Large Transfers and Whale Activity
Whale activity was moderate. I counted roughly 1,260 transfers above $1M across the four chains, with a combined value near $42B. The largest single transfer of the week was a ~$740M USDT move between exchange cold wallets on TRON.
| Type | Count (>= $1M) | Combined value | w/w change (count) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stablecoin whales | ~865 | ~$28B | -1% |
| Bitcoin whales | ~205 | ~$8.4B | -2% |
| Ethereum whales | ~135 | ~$4.2B | -4% |
| Other | ~55 | ~$1.4B | -14% |
6. Exchange Flows
Exchange net flows were mixed. Bitcoin saw mild outflows (~3,500 BTC), Ethereum was neutral, and stablecoin exchange supply continued to decline slowly.
| Asset | Net flow (7d) | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| BTC | -3,500 BTC out | Mild outflow |
| ETH | +95,000 ETH in | Near-neutral |
| USDT | -0.6% of exchange supply | Continued shift to self-custody |
| USDC | -1.4% of exchange supply | Treasury migration on one major venue |
7. Staking and Energy Market
On TRON, total TRX staked for energy and bandwidth remained above 60% of circulating supply. Energy rental prices moved in a narrow band for a second week.
8. Anomaly Scan
I run a simple anomaly check against the trailing four-week series. This week, no metric crossed the two-standard-deviation threshold.
- ☐TRON daily USDT transfer count: flat w/w - within normal range.
- ☐Bitcoin average fee: +3% w/w - within normal range.
- ☐No exchange reported abnormal withdrawal pressure.
- ☐No bridge or protocol reported a drain this week.
9. What the Data Says About the Trend
Four weeks of data are now legible as a trend. Settlement is consolidating on cheap rails; transfer counts keep rising; and stablecoin supply keeps compounding. This week was a steady-state version of last week - which is the cleanest possible confirmation of the trend.
| Indicator | 4 weeks ago | This week | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stablecoin supply | ~$288B | ~$300B | Up steadily |
| Daily transfer count | ~6.9M | ~7.2M | Up |
| TRON USDT share | ~53% | ~54% | Stable |
| Avg USDT transfer size | ~$1,520 | ~$1,380 | Down (more retail) |
10. Outlook for Next Week
I expect the steady-state trends to continue: stablecoin supply toward $302B, L2 fee compression toward a new floor, and payment corridor expansion. The main risk to watch is an EU travel-rule onboarding deadline that lands in the next 30 days.
11. Methodology Notes
Figures come from public explorers and dashboards; I round them and label estimates. Weekly comparisons use the w/w formula below, the four-week average is a simple mean, and anomaly flags use two standard deviations from that mean.
| Dataset | Primary source type | Update lag |
|---|---|---|
| Active addresses | Public explorers | ~1 day |
| Stablecoin supply | Issuer transparency pages | ~1 day |
| Gas and fees | Fee oracles (mempool, gas APIs) | Real-time |
| Exchange flows | Netflow dashboards | ~1 day |
| Whale transfers | Explorer whale alerts | Real-time |
- Stablecoin supply crossed $300B for the 19th straight week; growth is structural.
- Base held its USDC transfer count lead over Ethereum mainnet for a second week.
- Fees stayed low across every major rail; a third L2 fee cut in three weeks.
- Whale activity moderate; largest single transfer was a $740M USDT move on TRON.
- No anomalies this week; the four-week trends are intact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does this data come from?
Public block explorers, network dashboards, issuer transparency pages, gas oracles and market-data APIs. Reference values are rounded and estimates are labelled.
What does w/w mean?
Week-over-week: this week's value compared with the previous week, expressed as a percentage change.
Why does TRON process so many USDT transfers?
Because the all-in cost is roughly $0.20-0.25, far below Ethereum mainnet, and bandwidth plus rented energy make high-frequency transfers economical.
What is the four-week average for?
It smooths weekly noise. I compare each metric against it to distinguish trends from one-off events.
Is any of this financial advice?
No. This report is independent research on public data, not investment advice.
